Regatta Day, also known as the Royal St. John’s Regatta, dates back to 1816. This historic event began in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador and is considered the oldest organized sporting event in North America. It started as a series of boat races, which were initially informal competitions among fishermen and sailors.
The first officially recorded race took place in 1816, organized to celebrate the anniversary of King George III’s coronation.
