The annual festival is dedicated to St. Thomas, the apostle of
Christ. Believed to be one of the seven churches established by St.
Thomas in 52 C.E., St. Thomas Church in Palayur near Chavakkad has a
rich history spanning nearly two millennia.
The annual festival
at this historic church lasts for two days, drawing thousands of
attendees from various walks of life. The festival features vibrant
pageants, orchestras, and spectacular fireworks, mirroring the grandeur
of Hindu festivals celebrated in Thrissur. The celebrations are marked
by an array of activities that highlight the deep-rooted cultural and
spiritual traditions of the region.
The St. Thomas Archdiocesan
Shrine, known for its annual Lenten Mahatheerthadanam (great
pilgrimage), spans a 30 km route from Thrissur to Palayur, attracting
pilgrims from across the state. The festival's significance is
heightened by the church's history, with its origins tracing back to the
time of St. Thomas' arrival in Kerala.
