National Yorkie Day began in 2009 thanks to a small group of dog lovers who ran TheWoofBookGroup.com. They wanted to create a fun, meaningful day to honor the Yorkshire Terrier.
These tiny dogs have huge personalities, and the group felt they deserved their own spotlight. Instead of picking a random date, they chose one that already carried meaning in the breed’s history.
The date lines up with Yorkshire Day, which celebrates the region in northern England where the breed first appeared.
That area gave the Yorkshire Terrier its name. By tying the dog’s celebration to its place of origin, the founders added depth to the idea.
