The first media reference to jelly beans in the United States was documented in the late 19th century. At that time, they had already become a favorite penny candy. However, it was not until the 20th century that jelly beans gained even further popularity. During the World Wars, American soldiers received jelly beans as part of their rations, introducing the cute little candies to a broader audience.
Jelly Belly, one of the most famous jelly bean manufacturers, played an enormous role in popularizing these sweet treats once and for all. In 1976, the Jelly Belly company created a new Blueberry flavor, which turned into a big hit and contributed to the greater appeal of jelly beans.
