Scientists believe that nuts have probably been part of the human diet since the beginning of history. In fact, some of the oldest walnut remains ever discovered were found in Iraq and are believed to be more than 50,000 years old.
Often considered by Ancient Romans and Greeks to be “food for the gods”, nuts were commonly used as trade items, and were also sometimes used to make oil. Almonds were also ground into flour or made into “milk”.
As one of the first convenience foods, nuts were easily transportable and naturally preserved, as well as being nourishing and filling. Every type of nut, from pistachios to pecans, from chestnuts to almost, has its own unique history that has brought them all together into the modern era.
