The modern game of golf may have originated in 15th-century Scotland, but the game’s ancient origins can be traced back to the Roman game of paganica, in which participants used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. Some historians assert that paganica spread throughout Europe as the Romans conquered most of the continent almost 2,000 years ago, and eventually evolved into what is now golf.
Other historians believe that Chuiwan, a Chinese game played between the eighth and 14th centuries, was the father of modern golf as it is known today. A Ming Dynasty scroll dating back to 1368 entitled “The Autumn Banquet” shows a member of the Chinese Imperial court swinging what appears to be a golf club at a small ball with the aim of sinking it into a hole and would thus seem to support this version of history.
