National Braiders Day

National Braiders Day honors the creativity, care, and tradition found in braiding. It officially began in 2019, thanks to a company called Ezbraid. They recognized how much skill and time braiding takes, but saw that braiders didn’t always get fair treatment.
In many places, they had to follow strict licensing rules meant for cosmetologists, even though braiding doesn’t involve chemicals or cutting. Ezbraid wanted to create space for braiders to feel valued, both as artists and as professionals.
The idea for change didn’t come out of nowhere. Back in 1997, a Texas braider named Isis Brantley stood up against unfair laws. She was arrested for braiding without a license and spent years fighting for her rights.
Her case brought attention to how these rules blocked braiders from working freely. After a long battle, the state finally lifted those limits. That win opened doors for others and helped shift public views.
National Braiders Day grew from that same spirit of fairness and pride. It not only celebrates talent but also brings attention to the everyday struggles many face in the industry.
