Global, Global
International Assistance Dog Week was founded in 2009 by Marcie Davis, a passionate advocate for people with disabilities. Marcie, who has relied on a service dog since a spinal cord injury, wanted to raise awareness about the incredible work these dogs do.
The week was created to celebrate the dedication of assistance dogs and their trainers, recognizing the vital role they play in helping individuals lead more independent lives.
The idea quickly gained support from organizations around the world. These groups embraced the opportunity to educate the public about the different types of assistance dogs, including guide dogs, hearing dogs, and mobility assistance dogs.
The week also serves to highlight the rigorous training these dogs undergo and the life-changing impact they have on their handlers.
