Bear Necessities Month traces its roots back to a sincere effort to protect bears and their natural habitats. This special month is celebrated every September and was inspired by the classic song “The Bare Necessities” from Disney’s “The Jungle Book.”
The song’s simple message, advocating for focusing on life’s basic, essential joys, perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the month. It encourages us to declutter our lives, reconnect with nature, and contribute to the protection of bear populations.
The World Society for the Protection of Animals (W.S.P.A.), formed from the merger of two animal protection organizations in 1981, played a key role in initiating Bear Necessities Month in 2012.
This period of heightened activity for bears, especially as they prepare for hibernation, underscores the importance of understanding and supporting their needs.
This was part of their broader mission to safeguard wildlife and ensure the well-being of animals around the globe. Throughout its history, W.S.P.A. has been involved in various conservation efforts, including saving and caring for animals affected by natural disasters and combating animal trafficking.
Bear Necessities Month serves multiple purposes. It raises awareness about the challenges bears face, such as habitat loss and the threat of hunting.
It also promotes actions that support bear conservation, from donating to animal protection organizations to educating others about bear safety.
